Raptors Wilt In Fourth Against Heat At ACC

rapsheat_3

TORONTO (CP) — Miami’s record-setting win steak continued where it started thanks to an inspiring speech from Heat veteran Shane Battier.

The 34-year-old forward delivered a rousing team speech the night Miami started its streak in Toronto with victory Feb 3., and delivered another one Sunday after the Heat defeated the Raptors 108-91 to win their 22nd consecutive game.

Of course, some credit should go to LeBron James, who poured in 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead Miami’s offence, but it was Battier’s oratory skills that had the ...

rapsbobcats_1

TORONTO — Even though the playoff lights are getting dimmer for the Raptors, head coach Dwane Casey doesn’t want his team going to sleep.

Rudy Gay had 28 points and Amir Johnson grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds as Toronto came alive in the second half to beat the league-worst Charlotte Bobcats 92-78 on Friday night.

Johnson added 12 points and Sebastian Telfair chipped in 11 points for Toronto (26-40), which is seven games behind Milwaukee for eighth in the East with 16 games remaining.

Raptors Roughed Up By Celtics In Boston

BOSTON (CP) — Kevin Garnett received his standing ovation in the second quarter, then joined Boston’s fans when they returned to their feet for Paul Pierce.

Garnett and Pierce added to their growing list of accomplishments with significant moves up the list of NBA career scoring leaders Wednesday in the Celtics’ 112-88 rout of the Toronto Raptors.

Garnett passed Jerry West for 15th all-time and Pierce joined him in the top 20 scorers in league history when he passed Charles Barkley for No. 20.

“The joke around here is that every two ...

Raptors Hang On To Beat Cavaliers At ACC

TORONTO (CP) — The Toronto Raptors had every reason to blow Sunday’s game.

Short-handed and tired after travelling through the night following Friday’s crushing loss in Los Angeles, coach Dwane Casey told his team at halftime he wouldn’t accept any excuses.

The Raptors listened, with Amir Johnson leading the way with 17 points and a career-tying 16 rebounds, to rally from a 17-point deficit to top the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-96

“It was like day and night, and I expected it just because of the schedule,” Casey said of the Raptors’ horrible first ...

Raptors Can’t Hold Off Bryant, Lakers In OT

LOS ANGELES (CP) — Kobe Bryant’s steely determination never wavers. It’s his 34-year-old body he sometimes wonders about.

He skipped pre-game shootaround because his shoulders were tight, and he was feeling weary in overtime.

But Bryant found enough energy to hit the tying 3-pointer with 5 seconds to play in regulation, then dunked for the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left in the extra session, helping the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 118-116 on Friday night for their second straight come-from-behind win.

They rallied from 25 points down to beat ...

Raptors End Losing Streak, Outshine Suns

PHOENIX (CP) — Sebastian Telfair had some extra incentive in his return to Phoenix for the first time since the Suns traded him to Toronto last month.

Telfair, who had played in only one game with the Raptors, scored 13 points to help Toronto cruise to a 98-71 win over Phoenix on Wednesday night.

“I love playing in Phoenix,” Telfair said. “I love the city, the fans. I learned a lot here and grew as a person. But I had to leave my kids. My kids are back here in school ...

Raptors Fade In Fourth And Fall To Warriors

gay_300_030513

OAKLAND, Calif. (CP) — Stephen Curry dribbled down court and saw Andrew Bogut sprinting to his left. He tossed a lob well above the rim, and Bogut leaped up high for a powerful two-handed dunk that had the rest of the Golden State Warriors running off the bench to offer high-fives and hugs in celebration.

The alley-oop in the second quarter of Golden State’s 125-118 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night will either be a turning point or just another brief burst of brilliance in an injury-saddled season ...

Raptors Come Up Short In Overtime Against Bucks

rapsbucks300_2

MILWAUKEE (CP) — Monta Ellis did it — again.

Ellis scored six of his 23 points in overtime and Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings added five apiece in the extra period to spark the Milwaukee Bucks to a 122-114 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night.

Ellis was the star of the Bucks’ 110-107 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. He scored 27 points, but it was his last shot, a 3-pointer at the buzzer, that sealed the win.

Against Toronto, Ellis was 9 of 18 from the floor ...

Raptors Drop Third Straight With Loss To Pacers

rapspacers200_030113

The Toronto Raptors saw the kind of effort it takes to make the NBA’s playoffs on Friday _ the Indiana Pacers showed them how it’s done.

Paul George’s 22 points and 10 rebounds helped the Pacers pull away from the Raptors as Indiana downed Toronto 93-81.

The Pacers ratcheted up the tempo offensively in the second half and clamped down on the defensive end as they put the game almost out of reach with a quarter left to play.

“That’s the level we’ve got to get ready for,” said Raptors head coach ...

Raptors Can’t Hold Lead In Road Loss To Cavaliers

CLE_rudy300_022713

CLEVELAND (CP) — Kyrie Irving isn’t the only Cavaliers guard with killer instinct on the court.

When the game’s on the line, Dion Waiters wants the spotlight — and the ball.

“I live for that,” the rookie said.

Waiters scored 23 points, his last two coming on a crucial jumper with 1:43 left, Shaun Livingston added 15 and Cleveland overcame a horrendous start to win its second straight game without an injured Irving, 103-92 over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

The Cavs made only one of their first 15 shots, but recovered ...
