The (Long) Weekend In Raptors Photos

The Raptors may not be playing right now, but that doesn’t mean we’re not keeping tabs on them all over the world.

Straight from Lithuanian news site lrytas.lt, it appears that Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas is engaged. Congrats to the big man!

Meanwhile, DeMar DeRozan was kicking it back home in California. Not surprisingly, this got posted to his instagram account after a late night workout at his alma mater of USC.

Rudy Gay was also putting in work this weekend, heading to beautiful Milan to represent the NBA at the NBA 3X ...

Early Morning With Ross And BlackBerry

BlackBerry became the Official Computing Partner of MLSE earlier this week and the Raptors wanted to help spread the news on Wednesday. Terrence Ross joined Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul live on CP24 Breakfast and Breakfast Television in Toronto to talk about the partnership and give out some tickets to the 2013-14 home opener along the way.

We covered it all with Story Maker on the BlackBerry Z10 and the results are below:

Dwane Casey wants a new/old look for the 2013-2014 edition of the Toronto Raptors.

Casey’s availability at Air Canada Centre, Thursday, was prompted by media questions surrounding his future after the hiring of new Raptors GM Masai Ujiri.

Casey said he and Ujiri have been working in tandem since the new GM took over May 30 but added no coach is safe, especially in an off-season that featured the firing of celebrated coaches George Karl in Denver and Lionel Hollins in Memphis.

“I’ve never taken anything for granted,” ...

Dwane Casey Back As Raptors Coach

Dwane Casey will be back for the third and final year of his contract.

Dwane Casey is getting a do-over.

The Raptors announced Wednesday that Casey will be returning for the third and final year of his contract.

Casey’s story is the tale of two seasons.

He inherited a bare bones team in 2011-12 and delivered a creditable 23-43 season built on team defence. The Raptors went from the bottom of the league to ninth overall in points allowed in Casey’s first season with the club.

Dwane Casey will be back for the third and final year of his contract.

Amidst the flurry of activity on the 15th floor at ACC, Ujiri took a few minutes to sit down with me in his office to discuss his start with the Raptors.

Masai Ujiri, Citizen Of The World, Comes Home

Masai Ujiri is the Raptors fifth General Manager.

“I don’t have anything written. I’m going to speak straight from my heart.

“I’m home.”

With those words, Masai Ujiri became the first repatriated Raptors executive.

There have been returning players:  Antonio Davis, Maceo Baston, Tracy Murray, Rasho Nesterovic and Oliver Miller came back for a return engagement, but none of those returned in their prime.

Ujiri is the reigning NBA Executive of the Year thanks to a 57-25 season with the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets were one of the youngest teams in the NBA and, at 42, Ujiri, like his former club, hasn’t ...

From a cold floor to the corner office.

masai300_2

Masai Ujiri spent a night sleeping on a cold tile floor.

The story is one of a growing legion about the assent of the Raptors’ newly-minted GM through the NBA toward his current status as the league’s reigning executive of the year.

At the time Ujiri was an unpaid scout for the Orlando Magic. That affiliation was a testimony to Ujiri’s personality and connections.

The Magic had no budget for a scout to travel the world as Ujiri did. A Nigerian, Ujiri’s appeal was his potential to unearth African players.

There has been but one ...
