DeMar DeRozan has been leader on court for the Raptors this season and he continues to serve as one in the community with the launch of the DeMar DeRozan All-Star Book Program in Toronto on Tuesday.
The program, which includes a partnership with The BIGA Picture, First Book Canada and the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, draws much of its inspiration from the jersey number 10 worn by the first-time NBA All-Star. The program will donate over 3,000 books to 10 grade five classes from 10 schools in under-served areas of Toronto and students will write one book report per week for 10 weeks.
The class with the most comprehensive reports is heading to a Raptors home game, where they’ll meet DeRozan in person and receive even more books.
DeRozan was joined by his fiancé Kiara Morrison at Indigo Eaton Centre to make the announcement, which was also attended by students, teachers and principals from participating schools, plus authors and publishers of the books that will be used in the program.
The launch comes one day after DeRozan was recognized as the Raptors Community MVP for the first month on 2014, thanks to his ongoing contributions to youth in the Greater Toronto Area.
We’ll have video from the launch of the DeMar DeRozan All-Star Book Program soon, but check out more photos from the event below.
