Raptors Training Camp Recap: Day One

The Raptors tipped off Training Camp on Tuesday with their first of four two-a-day practice sessions this week at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.  First up after the morning workout was head coach Dwane Casey, who spoke about an early focus on re-establishing the team’s defensive foundation early, a rough approximation of Kyle Lowry’s “swag quotient”, progress for third-year forward Ed Davis and much more.

Speaking of Valanciunas, the rookie big man continues to recover from a calf strain that sidelined him in informal workouts in Toronto last week, but ...

An Early Setback For Valanciunas

Breath easy Raptors fans, Jonas Valanciunas is expected to be OK.

That was the news from the team’s latest voluntary workout on Monday, after it was revealed that the fifth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft suffered a left calf strain during a shooting drill at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

“He was here shooting Saturday morning with [assistant coach] Scott Roth, he went up to go into his shot and he felt something pop,” Dwane Casey told the media on Monday. “Your first thought is that it was his achilles ...

Q & A With Alex Rucker – Pt. 2

Analytics suggest that both Landry Fields (left) and Kyle Lowry (right) should be solid additions to the Raptors. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

Alex Rucker offers quantitative analytical support to the Raptors coaching staff and front office. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

The opportunity to sit and chat with Raptors Director of Analytics Alex Rucker is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Advanced stats isn’t a topic we’ve heard a lot about with relation to the Raptors over the years and Rucker has been a big part of its recent growth within the organization.

I met him inside the Raptors front office headquarters at ACC recently to talk tweets, trends, summer transactions and a how ...

Calderon Takes Time Out For Zambia

Jose Calderon’s greatest assist of the year may have come in August.

The Raptors point guard recently travelled to Zambia for a field visit, where he received a first-hand look at the work UNICEF is doing with the country’s education, water and sanitation programs.

José Manuel Calderón walks with Po, 9 years old, through his village in South of Zambia.  (UNICEF España/Zambia/2012).

For Calderon, visiting the African nation — where 80 per cent of the rural population lives below the poverty line — was a eye-opening experience and prompted him to speak ...

(Rookie) Survey Says?

In what seems equal parts peer evaluation and popularity contest, the results of NBA.com’s annual Rookie Survey can range from predictable to flat out bizarre.

Nonetheless, this year’s edition of the survey should be of interest for Raptors fans ...
