Fields A Solid Piece Of Raps Reconstruction

The Raptors will use Landry Fields to defend the league’s top scorers including the Heat’s Dwayne Wade.

Watching Landry Fields’ footwork will never be more interesting than it was Tuesday.

The Raptors introduced their new starting swingman as well as newly-acquired point guard Kyle Lowry at Air Canada Centre.

Fields signed to a three-year-contract the New York Knicks opted not to match was presented with a variety of questions about why his sophomore season paled when compared to his rookie campaign.

In his first year with the Knicks, Fields shot .497 per cent […]

New Point Guard Kyle Lowry Has A Fan In Alvin Williams

Kyle Lowry, acquired by the Raptors from the Houston Rockets brings an aggressive win-at-all costs countenance to the Raptors.

About eight years ago, Raptors assistant coach Alvin Williams scrimmaged at Villanova in his hometown of Philadelphia.

He faced another Philly-born point guard,  a kid he had helped recruit to the school.

“I thought he was a jerk,” said Williams, who played 460 games for the Raptors from 1998-2006 before ravaged knees forced his retirement at 30.

“I know what Alvin would have said,” Kyle Lowry said, laughing. “It’s just a matter of maturing […]

Lithuania Heading To Summer Games…

Lithuania grabbed one of the final three spots at the London 2012 Olympics with a 109-83 semifinal win over the Domincan Republic on Saturday and a pair of Raptors figured prominently in the victory.

First up is Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors’ fifth overall selection from 2011 who is expected to join the Raptors this fall. Valanciunas may not have had his finest three-game stretch building up to the final match (including some persistent foul trouble), but he saved his best for last with a potent 17-point, seven-rebound performance against the Dominican […]

New Raptor does best work on the boards

Go ahead. Try not to think of Reggie Evans.

Ladies and gentlemen please welcome Quincy Acy, the newest member of the Reggie Evans Club.

While he was drafted 37th, a whole league behind number eighth pick Terrence Ross, the bearded former Baylor forward made an immediate impression in his initial Raptors performance, Friday.

At a meet and greet with local media, Acy seemed a newer, equally Amish Reggie.

“It’s Reggie Evans with a free throw,” cracked GM Bryan Colangelo.

Injuries limited the original Reggie to just 58 Raptor games but it’s hard to forget […]

Raptors take shooting guard Terrence Ross at number eight

The Raptors made Washington shooting guard Terrence Ross their pick at number eight overall.

It’s a long shadow that extends all the way from Luthuania.

With Jonas Valanciunas ready to debut in the middle next season, the Raptors opted for an athletic shooting guard in six-foot-six Washington guard Terrence Ross with the eighth choice in the NBA draft.

The dominos look like this. Andrea Bargnani stays at the four spot where he will be occasionally supplemented by a still-learning Ed Davis.

Ross, a native of Portland, Ore., is probably a more naturally gifted jump […]

Tuesday was the last scheduled day of Raptors pre-draft workouts, with a group of possible candidates for the team’s 37th and 56th picks in Thursday’s draft.

Akil and I offer up a recap at top, while Raptors executive vice-president of basketball operations Ed Stefanski shares his thoughts on the workout and talks about a weekend visit to see Jonas Valanciunas and Linas Kleiza with the Lithuanian national team.

You can see full scrums with Purdue forward Robbie Hummel and Xavier guard Tu Holloway in our Raptors Prospect Playlist.

Valanciunas, Kleiza Head To Houston With Lithuanian Team

It’s been all draft all the time the last couple of weeks, but let’s not forget about what a big summer of international basketball it’s going to be for some Raptors. Andrea Bargnani will not be a part of the Italian team aiming to qualify for the next EuroBasket tournament, but Jose Calderon will play a key role in Spain’s quest for gold at the Olympic Games and DeMar DeRozan gets a taste of the international stage with the U.S. Select Team.

But keep an eye on Lithuania, where both Linas […]

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 5

Return To Draft Central | Thursday’s Prospect Interviews | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

Some quick points from Thursday’s pre-draft workout, where the headliners were clearly Kentucky’s Terrence Jones, Baylor’s Perry Jones III, North Carolina’s John Henson and Jared Sullinger of Ohio State University:

– As Eric Koreen points out in the National Post, be wary of anyone who claims they know what the Raptors are doing with that eighth pick next week. Within the last 24 hours or so of this posting, […]

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 4

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Friday rounded out a busy week of pre-draft workouts at ACC with what appeared to be a physically punishing session from a group of forwards that could possibly be in the mix for one of the Raptors two second-round selection at 37 and 56.

In short, the perfect environment for Baylor forward Quincy Acy, who’s thrived on tenacity and a high-energy game over the course of four seasons with the Bears.

“It was very physical because we […]

Wayne Embry’s Invention Keeps Rolling On

Wayne Embry is a member of an NBA championship team, a Hall of Famer and an advisor to Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo.

But his greatest legacy is being played out today in NBA interview rooms, posh restaurants and limo rides to and from airports.

The pre-draft interview is Embry’s baby. Every time a prospect breaks bread with a potential employer, whenever  an agent reminds a young player to look a GM in the eye, Wayne Embry is there.

In the late 1980’s, Embry was frustrated by the poor draft record of the Cleveland […]
