The Raptors tipped off Training Camp on Tuesday with their first of four two-a-day practice sessions this week at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax. First up after the morning workout was head coach Dwane Casey, who spoke about an early focus on re-establishing the team’s defensive foundation early, a rough approximation of Kyle Lowry’s “swag quotient”, progress for third-year forward Ed Davis and much more.
Speaking of Valanciunas, the rookie big man continues to recover from a calf strain that sidelined him in informal workouts in Toronto last week, but held court with another large group of media on Tuesday. Watch his scrum below, with a particularly interesting comment on looking forward to matching up against Lakers pivot Dwight Howard.
Why? “Because he’s the best centre in the league.”
Raptors President and General Manger Bryan Colangelo then held court to end the morning session in a wide-ranging scrum that covered the advantages and benefits of holding training camp abroad, plus more in increasing the level of character and internal competition on his roster.
We’ll have a little more from the second half of Tuesday’s two-a-day tomorrow, but perhaps no photo sums up the work put in on Day One, than this shot of John Lucas III and Lowry.
Ice down and sleep well, back at it for two more practices tomorrow…
