Jonas Valanciunas scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 82-76 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the final game of the third day of action at NBA Summer League 2013 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada — Las Vegas.
San Antonio put up a fight down the stretch in the fourth, cutting the Raptors once-12 point lead to as few as two points, 78-76, with under a minute to play, but the Raptors held on to secure the six-point victory. Valanciunas was one of for Raptors to score in double figures: Terrence Ross scored 14, Chris Wright had 13 and Micah Downs finished with 11 in the win.
The Raptors and Spurs stayed close through three quarters, but it was all Toronto in the fourth, as the Canadian delegation opened up a 10-point lead, 69-59 with seven minutes to play, holding onto the lead until the final buzzer.
Toronto led by as many as six points in the first quarter, with both teams getting off to hot-shooting starts — the Raptors shot 50-percent while the Spurs connected on 47-percent of their first quarter attempts.
The teams battled in the second period, swapping the lead four times and knotting in two ties — including at 39 apiece as the squads headed back to the halftime locker rooms. Ross led all scorers after two with 12 points, while Joseph finished with 11 on four-of-six shooting in the first.
The Spurs were led by Deshaun Thomas and Cory Joseph who each finished with 16 points. Cory, who faced younger brother and Raptor Devoe Joseph, had a team-high six assists in the loss.
San Antonio, who is 1-1 this summer, plays the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow, while the Raptors, who are 1-1 in the 2013 summer classic after being defeated by the Miami Heat yesterday, enjoy a day off before returning to the court to face the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, July 16.
