Raptors Hang On To Beat Cavaliers At ACC

TORONTO (CP) — The Toronto Raptors had every reason to blow Sunday’s game.

Short-handed and tired after travelling through the night following Friday’s crushing loss in Los Angeles, coach Dwane Casey told his team at halftime he wouldn’t accept any excuses.

The Raptors listened, with Amir Johnson leading the way with 17 points and a career-tying 16 rebounds, to rally from a 17-point deficit to top the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-96

“It was like day and night, and I expected it just because of the schedule,” Casey said of the Raptors’ horrible first ...

Raptors Prep For Lakers In LA

Fresh off the Raptors’ win over the Suns in game three of their four-game road trip, the team held practice on the campus of UCLA on Thursday as they prepared for the Lakers on Friday in Staples Center.

Head coach Dwane Casey continued to laud his team’s defensive approach in Phoenix, but readily admitted that Friday’s meeting with a Lakers team battling for a playoff berth will be a completely different animal.

Sebastian Telfair had his first significant minutes as a Raptor against his former team in Phoenix and made the most ...

Raptors Fade In Fourth And Fall To Warriors

gay_300_030513

OAKLAND, Calif. (CP) — Stephen Curry dribbled down court and saw Andrew Bogut sprinting to his left. He tossed a lob well above the rim, and Bogut leaped up high for a powerful two-handed dunk that had the rest of the Golden State Warriors running off the bench to offer high-fives and hugs in celebration.

The alley-oop in the second quarter of Golden State’s 125-118 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night will either be a turning point or just another brief burst of brilliance in an injury-saddled season ...

Raptors Can’t Hold Lead In Road Loss To Cavaliers

CLE_rudy300_022713

CLEVELAND (CP) — Kyrie Irving isn’t the only Cavaliers guard with killer instinct on the court.

When the game’s on the line, Dion Waiters wants the spotlight — and the ball.

“I live for that,” the rookie said.

Waiters scored 23 points, his last two coming on a crucial jumper with 1:43 left, Shaun Livingston added 15 and Cleveland overcame a horrendous start to win its second straight game without an injured Irving, 103-92 over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

The Cavs made only one of their first 15 shots, but recovered ...

Raptors Come Out Flat In Loss To Wizards

rapswizards022513_300

TORONTO (CP) — With just 25 games left in the regular season, and the Toronto Raptors trying to claw their way into a playoff spot, there is no room for coasting.

Dwane Casey knows it, and he definitely let his players know it after the Raptors’ ugly 90-84 loss at home Monday to the Washington Wizards — the worst road team in the NBA.

“It was a stinker. They whupped us, they outworked us,” Casey said. “We tried to turn it on, turn it off. They got us. They kicked our ...

Raptors Ready To Push Forward Largely Unchanged

What you see is what you get.

With just a minor tweak at back-up point guard, the Toronto Raptors are moving ahead with a pat hand.

Yesterday in the shadow of the NBA trade deadline the club added 27-year-old Sebastian Telfair from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a conditional second-rounder and centre Hamed Haddadi.

Haddadi is a holdover from the deal that brought Rudy Gay to Toronto from Memphis.

Telfair is on an expiring contract but nicely fills a need for a pass-inclined point guard behind starter Kyle Lowry and shot-happy John Lucas ...

Raptors Can’t Win Defensive Slugfest Against Grizzlies

MEM_gay_drive300

TORONTO (CP) — Rudy Gay’s former team showed it still knows him better than his new team does.

Gay was held to just 13 points and three assists as the Toronto Raptors fell 88-82 to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

“It was emotional, a little bit, it was good to see the guys,” said Gay, “but at the end of the day it was one of those things where we still thought we could win.”

Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said he felt sorry for Gay, who entered the game averaging 21.1 ...

Raptors Outlast Knicks At MSG To Extend Streak

NEW YORK — No big shots from Rudy Gay on this night. He hardly made any shots at all.

Neither did Carmelo Anthony, bothered by what he called a dead arm after being hit in the biceps early in the game.

Toronto won the battle of supporting casts, and the game.

Reserve Alan Anderson scored 26 points in one of the few good offensive performances for either team, and the Raptors beat the New York Knicks 92-88 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight victory.

DeMar DeRozan added 20 points for the Raptors, ...
