Raptors Give As Good As They Get, Lose Feisty Opener 90-88

Kyle Lowry had a huge night in his Raptors debut. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

Someone must have known.

Before last night’s Raptor game, a gospel choir warmed up the Air Canada Centre crowd. As the players were introduced the men and women sang…

“We are not afraid.

“We are not afraid.”

Turns out no one was.

Do not adjust your set, Raptor fans. What you are seeing seems to be real and if the result is heartbreaking – the Raptors once led by 11,  the singers had a point.

The Raptors were the hammer and not the nail ...

Full House At Practice As Season Opener Looms

It was all hands on deck for the Raptors at practice on Monday in a workout session head coach Dwane Casey described as the team’s last hard practice for a while.

A full complement of players might come as somewhat of a surprise given a pair of gruesome collisions that sent guards Jose Calderon and John Lucas III to the deck with leg injuries at Sunday’s intrasquad game, not to mention a poke to eye of DeMar DeRozan that sent him to the bench.

Yet all three were full participants on Monday ...

Bargnani, Davis Limited In Thursday’s Practice

The revolving door of minor preseason injuries continues for the Raptors. In terms of good news, rookie swingman Terrence Ross was a full participant at practice on Thursday after sitting out of Wednesday’s win against the Wizards with a sore left knee.

But gain one healthy body, go down two more as Andrea Bargnani (left calf contusion) and Ed Davis (lower body soreness) were limited in what they could do on Thursday.

Bargnani took a hit from an unidentified Wizard to the same calf that sidelined him for so much of last ...

Positive Start For Valanciunas

Call it small first step for Jonas Valanciunas.

The Raptors rookie centre saw just over 13 minutes of work in his first appearance on Wednesday since suffering a calf strain and finished with two points and two blocks (I saw three) in a Raptors 101-99 loss to the Pistons.

Head coach Dwane Casey said Valanciunas did an “excellent job” given the context of his first game and competition in the form of a big Detroit frontline.

“He was where he was supposed to be a lot on his offensive sets and ...

Valanciunas Could Debut Against Pistons

The wait to see Jonas Valanciunas in action may be over soon.

That was the news out of Tuesday’s practice, as it was revealed the rookie centre participated in full contact drills at Tuesday’s practice and, as a result, could be ready to see minutes on Wednesday against the Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

“We’re going to see how his body feels tomorrow after going through today and then we’ll make the decision,” said head coach Dwane Casey. “Again, the young man hasn’t done anything for us in ...

Rookie Concert In Halifax

Things we’re thankful for? Rookies that can get down — like the trio of Quincy Acy, Jonas Valanciunas and (to a lesser extent) Terrence Ross for a little team initiation at yesterday’s intrasquad scrimmage in Halifax.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Raptors fans celebrating this weekend. We’ll have more from Sunday’s practice later today as the Raptors prepare to open preseseason play against Real Madrid on Monday.

Raptors Training Camp Recap: Day One

The Raptors tipped off Training Camp on Tuesday with their first of four two-a-day practice sessions this week at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.  First up after the morning workout was head coach Dwane Casey, who spoke about an early focus on re-establishing the team’s defensive foundation early, a rough approximation of Kyle Lowry’s “swag quotient”, progress for third-year forward Ed Davis and much more.

Speaking of Valanciunas, the rookie big man continues to recover from a calf strain that sidelined him in informal workouts in Toronto last week, but ...

An Early Setback For Valanciunas

Breath easy Raptors fans, Jonas Valanciunas is expected to be OK.

That was the news from the team’s latest voluntary workout on Monday, after it was revealed that the fifth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft suffered a left calf strain during a shooting drill at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

“He was here shooting Saturday morning with [assistant coach] Scott Roth, he went up to go into his shot and he felt something pop,” Dwane Casey told the media on Monday. “Your first thought is that it was his achilles ...

Q & A With Alex Rucker – Pt. 2

Analytics suggest that both Landry Fields (left) and Kyle Lowry (right) should be solid additions to the Raptors. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

The opportunity to sit and chat with Raptors Director of Analytics Alex Rucker is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Advanced stats isn’t a topic we’ve heard a lot about with relation to the Raptors over the years and Rucker has been a big part of its recent growth within the organization.

Part two of our recent Q & A focused some key additions to the club including ...
