Raptors Training Camp Recap: Day One

The Raptors tipped off Training Camp on Tuesday with their first of four two-a-day practice sessions this week at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.  First up after the morning workout was head coach Dwane Casey, who spoke about an early focus on re-establishing the team’s defensive foundation early, a rough approximation of Kyle Lowry’s “swag quotient”, progress for third-year forward Ed Davis and much more.

Speaking of Valanciunas, the rookie big man continues to recover from a calf strain that sidelined him in informal workouts in Toronto last week, but ...

An Early Setback For Valanciunas

Breath easy Raptors fans, Jonas Valanciunas is expected to be OK.

That was the news from the team’s latest voluntary workout on Monday, after it was revealed that the fifth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft suffered a left calf strain during a shooting drill at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

“He was here shooting Saturday morning with [assistant coach] Scott Roth, he went up to go into his shot and he felt something pop,” Dwane Casey told the media on Monday. “Your first thought is that it was his achilles ...

Q & A With Alex Rucker – Pt. 2

Analytics suggest that both Landry Fields (left) and Kyle Lowry (right) should be solid additions to the Raptors. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

The opportunity to sit and chat with Raptors Director of Analytics Alex Rucker is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Advanced stats isn’t a topic we’ve heard a lot about with relation to the Raptors over the years and Rucker has been a big part of its recent growth within the organization.

Part two of our recent Q & A focused some key additions to the club including ...

Alex Rucker offers quantitative analytical support to the Raptors coaching staff and front office. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

The opportunity to sit and chat with Raptors Director of Analytics Alex Rucker is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Lithuania Heading To Summer Games…

Lithuania grabbed one of the final three spots at the London 2012 Olympics with a 109-83 semifinal win over the Domincan Republic on Saturday and a pair of Raptors figured prominently in the victory.

First up is Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors’ fifth overall selection from 2011 who is expected to join the Raptors this fall. Valanciunas may not have had his finest three-game stretch building up to the final match (including some persistent foul trouble), but he saved his best for last with a potent 17-point, seven-rebound performance against the Dominican ...

Valanciunas, Kleiza Head To Houston With Lithuanian Team

It’s been all draft all the time the last couple of weeks, but let’s not forget about what a big summer of international basketball it’s going to be for some Raptors. Andrea Bargnani will not be a part of the Italian team aiming to qualify for the next EuroBasket tournament, but Jose Calderon will play a key role in Spain’s quest for gold at the Olympic Games and DeMar DeRozan gets a taste of the international stage with the U.S. Select Team.

But keep an eye on Lithuania, where both Linas ...

More Accolades For Valanciunas

We’ve had an excellent snapshot of Jonas Valanciunas thanks to the NBA TV Canada special “Centred” (which you can still see online ), but the big man is still finishing off regular-season play overseas and recently received some recognition from a couple of the leagues where his club team, Lietuvos Rytas, competes.

First up, is a poll on the official site of the VTB United League, where Lietuvos Rytas plays against some of the other top teams from Eastern and Northern Europe. When fans were asked who their choice was for ...
