ATLANTA _ Al Horford had 22 points and 16 rebounds, three other Atlanta starters scored in double figures and the Hawks defeated the Toronto Raptors 102-95 on Friday night to give Mike Budenholzer his first head coaching victory.

The Hawks built an 18-point lead late in the third quarter, then held off a Raptors comeback in the final period. Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver had 17 points apiece, while Paul Millsap added 15.

Amir Johnson Makes Zombie Walk Return… To Dance

Amir Johnson simply participated in Toronto’s annual Zombie Walk last year. This year he took it up a notch or ten with a full choreographed routine set to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, naturally. Some amazing stuff below from the NBA’s social media MVP.

You may recognize my fellow blogger Kat Stefankiewicz, Foot Locker Raptors Dance Pak coordinator Amberley Waddell and other former members of the RDP adding their talents to the routine.

It certainly beats how Amir was using staff earlier in the week…

Stripes The Mascot Gets His Chance To Shine

Stripes the Mascot has hit town.

Stripes has been called up to The Show.

After an exhaustive search that failed to turn up the Raptors’ new mascot, the club turned to an in-house solution.

In The Raptor’s house, as it turned out.

Stripes is The Raptor’s young cousin. His mom still calls him Velociraptor, especially when he is in trouble, but his unique markings led to his nickname when Stripes was just a kid about, oh, 200 million years ago.

The Raptor suffered a potentially season-ending injury early in the exhibition season. A true gamer, The Raptor has braved injuries ...

Valanciunas Eager To Build On Rookie Season

Jonas Valanciunas, shown here defending Minnesota centre Nikola Pekovic, will see plenty of contact this season.

The advice to Jonas Valanciunas from Rudy Gay is simple enough.

“I just tell him be himself,” Gay said. “Dominate.  Be the best big player on the court. Be the best big man on the court.

“Be the person we all know you can be and it‘ll be easy.”

Gay is wrong on one count. It won’t be easy.  Wrestling big men such as Indiana’s Roy Hibbert or the Nets’ Brook Lopez will never be easy.  Never mind that Valanciunas, a Lithuanian who did not play college ball in the U.S., has less experience ...

Raptors Open Toronto Stock Exchange With New Partner BMO

Raptors president of basketball operations and GM Masai Ujiri along with members of his staff opened the market at the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning, which also saw the announcement of BMO as a major partner for the 2013-14 season.

The morning started as Ujiri presented BMO Chief Marketing Officer and Head Strategist Joanna Rotenberg with a signed Raptors jersey and publicly announced the Raptors’ new partnership with BMO.

But it wasn’t long before it was time for everyone to get in front of the camera and ring the bell (which ...

New GM Masai Ujiri Plans To Toughen The Troops

Masai Ujiri is careful.

The Raptors 43-year-old President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, the club’s fifth GM, has used a series of measured moves to re-position the team.

He signed rambunctious reserve Tyler Hansbrough and traded centre Andrea Bargnani to the New York Knicks for a package that came down to three-point shooter Steve Novak, a first-rounder in 2016 and second round picks in 2014 and 2017.

Ujiri retained head coach Dwane Casey, albeit with a reconfigured coaching staff and brought in depth players D.J. Augustin, Austin Daye and Julyan Stone.

But if ...

Raptors Preseason Game Against Bucks Called Due To Concerns About Court

Let’s call it a preseason.

After a start that saw several slips and stumbles from players on both sides, officials decided to call Friday’s game between the Raptors and Bucks at BMO Harris Bradley Center mid-way through the first quarter.
