ORLANDO, Fla. (CP) — Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey believes the next step for his team is to work on developing its identity, preferably one seeded in toughness.

He’s hoping a four-game season sweep of the Magic can serve as the first step in that mission.

After watching one of their best ...

MIAMI, Fla. (CP) — After sitting around for nearly a week, the Miami Heat expected to be a little less than razor-sharp.

It took an extra session, but the reigning NBA champions eventually found their groove.

Dwyane Wade scored 35 points, LeBron James got his 34th career triple-double and the Heat rallied from ...

Raptors Mid-Season Report Cards

Forty-one games gone.

Forty-one games to go.

The Raptors are 15-26 and likely will be until they play game number 42 in Miami, Wednesday.

Time for the mid-season report card.

Quincy Acy: 3.1 PPG, 2.10 RPG: Has delighted coaching staff with recent play and provided valuable minutes as team struggles without bigs Bargnani and Valanciunas. Has showed ability to hit 15 footers. Won’t ever rebound like his doppelganger Reggie Evans but will score more. Still miles to go. +C.

Alan Anderson: 12.3 PPG, 2.30 RPG: Excellent defender who can handle guards and forwards. Vocal leader.  ...

PHILADELPHIA (CP) — After sending the game to overtime, Jrue Holiday single-handedly took over during the extra session.

In the process, the fourth-year point guard continued to make a strong case for his first career All-Star berth next month in Houston. The reserves will be announced on Thursday night.

NEW YORK (CP) — P.J. Carlesimo put his head in his hand, sighed and brushed back his hair, hardly looking like a guy with a 9-1 record.

“I’m really struggling,” he started, adding that the Brooklyn Nets faced a “major, major concern.”

It’s a good one, though. They simply have so many guys playing well that it’s tough for ...

TORONTO – It was only 23 days ago that the Toronto Raptors hit what the team called the low point in its season _ a humiliating 18-point loss to the Portland Trail Blazers that ended a winless road trip and prompted the suggestion that jobs were in jeopardy.

The Raptors turned the tables ...

My Head Says Yes… Well, Among Other Things

The emergence of Terrence Ross and the continued maturation of Ed Davis are essentials if the Raptors are to play meaningful late-season games.

The emergence of Terrence Ross and the continued maturation of Ed Davis are essentials if the Raptors are to play meaningful late-season games.

This is poison in a basketball column.

Naturally, I am going to do it anyway.

Would you, as a fellow from that other sport once posited, want to make the playoffs only to risk being manhandled by another team?

Hell, yes.

I think the Raptors can make the playoffs.

I say this in the wake of the iceberg, the 4-19 start.

Logic, of course, dictates that the majority of teams that begin by ...

You ALWAYS Go Full Windmill

Not going to lie, the #letrossdunk movement felt sort of hollow with the rookie expressing a lack of interest in NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest a few weeks back.

… and then I saw this post-game Friday.

So the push continues and Ross certainly built on his jaw-dropping credentials in Friday’s win over the Magic. You saw a serious candidate for putback of the year and then a little style as the rook busts out the full windmill on a breakaway.

His thought process on the build up to that spectacular slam?

“I was thinking ...
