Q & A With Alex Rucker – Pt. 2

Analytics suggest that both Landry Fields (left) and Kyle Lowry (right) should be solid additions to the Raptors. (Ron Turenne/NBAE)

The opportunity to sit and chat with Raptors Director of Analytics Alex Rucker is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Advanced stats isn’t a topic we’ve heard a lot about with relation to the Raptors over the years and Rucker has been a big part of its recent growth within the organization.

Part two of our recent Q & A focused some key additions to the club including ...

Q & A With Alex Rucker – Pt. 1

Alex Rucker offers quantitative analytical support to the Raptors coaching staff and front office.

I met him inside the Raptors front office headquarters at ACC recently to talk tweets, trends, summer transactions and a how ...

Calderon Takes Time Out For Zambia

Jose Calderon’s greatest assist of the year may have come in August.

The Raptors point guard recently travelled to Zambia for a field visit, where he received a first-hand look at the work UNICEF is doing with the country’s education, water and sanitation programs.

José Manuel Calderón walks with Po, 9 years old, through his village in South of Zambia.  (UNICEF España/Zambia/2012).

For Calderon, visiting the African nation — where 80 per cent of the rural population lives below the poverty line — was a eye-opening experience and prompted him to speak ...

More Trick Shots From Calderon

Yesterday, we shared a clever KIA commerical featuring Jose Calderon putting his free throw shooting proficiency on display (likely with a little CGI assistance). It turns out it’s actually a series of ads, with two more surfacing today.

How about a little behind-the-back, off-the-hood and in action?

… but my personal favourite has to be his self-deprecating take on his less than huge hops.

Checking In During The Dog Days….

The dog days of summer may officially be here, but that doesn’t mean the Raptors aren’t making news.

From a league perspective, Raptors rookies Jonas Valanciunas, Terrence Ross and Quincy Acy all took part in the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program, which was followed by this year’s edition of the Rookie Photo Shoot.

Just click on Valanciunas looking like he’s about to posterize Mother Nature below to see all the photos of your newest Raptors.

New Point Guard Kyle Lowry Has A Fan In Alvin Williams

Kyle Lowry, acquired by the Raptors from the Houston Rockets brings an aggressive win-at-all costs countenance to the Raptors.

About eight years ago, Raptors assistant coach Alvin Williams scrimmaged at Villanova in his hometown of Philadelphia.

He faced another Philly-born point guard,  a kid he had helped recruit to the school.

“I thought he was a jerk,” said Williams, who played 460 games for the Raptors from 1998-2006 before ravaged knees forced his retirement at 30.

“I know what Alvin would have said,” Kyle Lowry said, laughing. “It’s just a matter of maturing ...

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 4

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Friday rounded out a busy week of pre-draft workouts at ACC with what appeared to be a physically punishing session from a group of forwards that could possibly be in the mix for one of the Raptors two second-round selection at 37 and 56.

In short, the perfect environment for Baylor forward Quincy Acy, who’s thrived on tenacity and a high-energy game over the course of four seasons with the Bears.

“It was very physical because we ...

Wayne Embry’s Invention Keeps Rolling On

Wayne Embry is a member of an NBA championship team, a Hall of Famer and an advisor to Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo.

But his greatest legacy is being played out today in NBA interview rooms, posh restaurants and limo rides to and from airports.

The pre-draft interview is Embry’s baby. Every time a prospect breaks bread with a potential employer, whenever  an agent reminds a young player to look a GM in the eye, Wayne Embry is there.

In the late 1980’s, Embry was frustrated by the poor draft record of the Cleveland ...

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 3

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 4

Thursday’s workout schedule was scheduled to be three potential lottery picks spread out over three sessions, but quickly changed after UConn guard Jeremy Lamb rolled an ankle just a few minutes in and was unable to continue with the workout. A tough break for the 20-year-old, who also chose not to speak with the media, but the Raptors did get to speak with Lamb prior to the workout and have certainly seen plenty of his ...
