Checking In During The Dog Days….

The dog days of summer may officially be here, but that doesn’t mean the Raptors aren’t making news.

From a league perspective, Raptors rookies Jonas Valanciunas, Terrence Ross and Quincy Acy all took part in the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program, which was followed by this year’s edition of the Rookie Photo Shoot.

Just click on Valanciunas looking like he’s about to posterize Mother Nature below to see all the photos of your newest Raptors.

New Point Guard Kyle Lowry Has A Fan In Alvin Williams

Kyle Lowry, acquired by the Raptors from the Houston Rockets brings an aggressive win-at-all costs countenance to the Raptors.

About eight years ago, Raptors assistant coach Alvin Williams scrimmaged at Villanova in his hometown of Philadelphia.

He faced another Philly-born point guard,  a kid he had helped recruit to the school.

“I thought he was a jerk,” said Williams, who played 460 games for the Raptors from 1998-2006 before ravaged knees forced his retirement at 30.

“I know what Alvin would have said,” Kyle Lowry said, laughing. “It’s just a matter of maturing ...

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 4

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Friday rounded out a busy week of pre-draft workouts at ACC with what appeared to be a physically punishing session from a group of forwards that could possibly be in the mix for one of the Raptors two second-round selection at 37 and 56.

In short, the perfect environment for Baylor forward Quincy Acy, who’s thrived on tenacity and a high-energy game over the course of four seasons with the Bears.

“It was very physical because we ...

Wayne Embry’s Invention Keeps Rolling On

Wayne Embry is a member of an NBA championship team, a Hall of Famer and an advisor to Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo.

But his greatest legacy is being played out today in NBA interview rooms, posh restaurants and limo rides to and from airports.

The pre-draft interview is Embry’s baby. Every time a prospect breaks bread with a potential employer, whenever  an agent reminds a young player to look a GM in the eye, Wayne Embry is there.

In the late 1980’s, Embry was frustrated by the poor draft record of the Cleveland ...

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 3

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 4

Thursday’s workout schedule was scheduled to be three potential lottery picks spread out over three sessions, but quickly changed after UConn guard Jeremy Lamb rolled an ankle just a few minutes in and was unable to continue with the workout. A tough break for the 20-year-old, who also chose not to speak with the media, but the Raptors did get to speak with Lamb prior to the workout and have certainly seen plenty of his ...

Raptors Draft Workout – Day 2

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 1 | Day 3 | Day 4

With the 37th and 56th picks in the upcoming draft on June 28th, the Raptors have two opportunities to try and land a diamond in the rough and Wednesday provided an up-close look at a handful of potential candidates.

There was some Canadian content among the group, including North Vancouver native Rob Sacre out of Gonzaga (C) and Syracuse forward Kris Joseph, who didn’t take part in contact drills due to a sore groin. In the ...

Raptors Draft Workouts – Day 1

Return To Draft Central | More Workout Recaps: Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

The Raptors pre-draft workouts got off to an intriguing start on Tuesday, with a pair of highly-ranked point guard prospects putting their skills on display in Toronto — just not against each other.

In the morning session, UNC point guard prospect Kendall Marshall was front and centre in a workout that featured only one other potential lottery selection in wiry, but explosive Washington forward Terrence Ross. Possible picks with the Raptors’ two second-round selections in Norfolk ...

Updates From The Draft Combine…

RWEB120607STEFANSKI-2122571-keyframes-10

Day one of the NBA Draft Combine has wrapped in Chicago and members of the Raptors front office have had a closer look at an undeniably deep draft class. Executive vice-president of basketball operations Ed Stefanski caught up with our Jeff Landicho during the day and described the relevance of the two-day affair and also offered up a little insight into how the Raptors are approaching the upcoming draft on June 28th.

Jeff is putting together his typically outstanding Behind The Draft special for later this summer, but has told me ...

Raptors To Pick Eighth After NBA Draft Lottery

There was no NBA Draft Lottery luck for the Raptors on Wednesday, as they remain in the eighth spot following a process that was very much about stone cold probabilities for most part. The Raptors had about a 12 per cent chance to move into the top three picks, a 70 per cent shot of staying eighth and were faced with the very real possibility of falling at least one spot to ninth (16.5 per cent).
