Dinner with Dee Brown anyone?
That’s what our friends over at Real Sports Bar and Grill are asking with an impromptu contest that will see three fans win a signed basketball and the opportunity to dine with the Raptors alumni in the Player’s Lounge on Sunday, August 18th.
Entering is simple. Fans simply need to share their favourite Dee Brown basketball moment with @RealSports on twitter and Brown will select the winners based on the responses.
You’ve certainly got some options as Brown used his blend of athleticism and long-range shooting to carve out a solid 12-season career with stops in Boston, Toronto and Orlando. The 6’1 guard out of Jacksonville University cracked the All-Rookie First Team with the Celtics in 1991 and went on to average 11.2 points, 3.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game over the course of his career.
Of course, Brown’s probably best known for a little showmanship with his win in the 1991 Slam Dunk Contest.
Brown went on to play two-and-a-half seasons with the Raptors during an era of remarkable change for the franchise.
He arrived as part of multi-player deal with the Celtics back in February of 1998 that saw Brown, forwards John Thomas and Roy Rogers and a rookie point guard by the name of Chauncey Billups come to Toronto in exchange for centre Zan Tabak, forward Popeye Jones and point guard Kenny Anderson (who refused to report to Toronto after he was acquired for Damon Stoudamire).
In 1999, Brown was part of the Raptors squad that transitioned from playing at Rogers Centre (then SkyDome) to the opening of Air Canada Centre. The following season, he was part of the first Raptors team to finish with a winning record (45-37) and qualify for post-season play.
Of course the catalyst for that turnaround was another high-flyer by the name of Vince Carter, who Brown connected with on one of the more memorable alley oops in Raptors history. Consider it the perfect passing of the baton from one explosive dunker to another.
Hopefully, this post starts to jog a few Dee Brown memories of your own. Remember to send them to @RealSports and you just might share be sharing them with the man himself on Sunday.
